Query Text:

Wasinger, Andrew and Miriam Both of Andrew's parents, John J. Wasinger and Catherine Scheck, were eleven years old when they arrived in Victoria, Kansas. They made the trip from Russia to Kansas together in 1876 and were married six years later. Andrew was born June 14, 1902, on the family farm northeast of Victoria. His two brothers were John and JosephHis five sisters were Mary Scheck, Pauline Wasinger, Catherine Richmeier, Adeline Waindholtz and Lidwena Leiker. Three other brothers died in infancy. Andrew was only one year old when his father died of heat stroke during harvest of 1903. To settle the estate, Catherine sold the farm in 1917 and moved to Victoria. She bought the house Andre and Miriam still live in. Built 1908 by Dr. Elizabeth Melcher, the house was her hospital. After finishing school in Victoria, Andrew went to a business college in Salina, Kansas. He then started teaching, first in a one-room school-house northeast of Victoria and then at the Catholic school in Sitka, Kansas. The desire to travel led him to Chicago where he worked in a factory making vacuum cleaners. The Depression years brought him back to Victoria. Work was hard to find various harvest jobs and a timekeeper's job with the WPA paid the bills. In 1939 he became the butcher at Braun's grocery. Two years later a new clerk started working there--Miriam Bellendir. Miriam's father, Adam Bellinder, was a Cossack soldier in the Russian Army. The assassination of Czar Nicholas and the subsequent Russian Revolution brought tremendous suffering to Russia. With money sent by his brother in America, he left Kaminka, Russia, in 19919 for Wamego, Kansas. He got his job with the Union Pacific Railroaded Several years later some more of his family made the trip from Russia to Kansas. While helping out during harvest, Adam met Catherine Brungardt. They were married July 12, 1921. Their first child, Miriam, was born in Wamego on April 30, 1922. Her four brothers are Raphael, Vitus, Vernon, and Marvin. Her two sisters are Rita Scheck and Bernadette Baier. When Miriam was one, the family moved to Victoria. A couple of years after graduation she became the clerk at Braun's Grocery. There she met the butcher. They were married July 19, 1944. They have four sons; Ronald, Clifford, Lloyd, and John who was stillborn. Their two daughters are Mary Battle and Rose Brown. When the grocery sold out in 1950's, Andrew went to work for Rohleder's Garage. He later became a painting contractor. After retirement he became the handyman for Father Neal and Father Felix at St. Fedelis Church. Miriam is still the homemaker. They continue to care for their mentally retarded son. Clifford, at hove. Over the years the gardening has slowed down, but they are still ready for a visit on the back porch swing.
