ELLIOTT

Query Text:

The London Times of April 11, 1853 reported the sailing of the AMERICA from Liverpool, commanded by Joseph J. Lawrence. It arrived in NY on 14 May, 1853 carrying William ELLIOTT, 44, with Lucy ELLIOTT, 18, and supposed siblings Margaret, 15 and Charles, 20. All 4 declared Ireland their home. William isn't accompanied by a wife so he may have been widowed. When? Coincidentally, on an earlier passenger list page, a Joseph ELLIOTT, age 27, was listed. He gave his home country as England; perhaps a scribe's error or was there a connection between these two ELLIOTT entries on the same ship? In 1855, Rev. Taggart in NYC, married William Elliott to a young woman of 28 Jane Burgess, an earlier immigrant from Ireland. On the marriage application William gave his address as St. Lawrence Co. NY! Why this county? Perhaps he was related to some Elliott's in that northern NY County! Almost immediately the family group moved to Iowa where they appear in the 1856 IA Census; William, 40 yrs., wife Jane, 28, and ELLIOTT children including the 3 immigrant young people listed above, plus a 1 yr. old son born in Iowa, and John ELLIOTT, a butcher, age 22. Who was this butcher, John? Was he related? In the 1860 Blackhawk Co. IA census William ELLIOTT appears with his young family unit including his young wife, Jane and 2 small sons, William A. and George D.B. plus Charles, 23. Records reveal that on 28 Dec 1858 Lucinda had married Christopher Betts my ancestor and on 01 Jan 1859 Margaret Ann had married a Robert Butterworth born in England. The 1860 IA census also reveals an Irish born carpenter, Charles ELLIOTT, 21, staying with Lucy's new family. How was he related? Was he the Charles on the ship in 1853? In Iowa they seem to have worshipped in Presbyterian and then in Baptist churches. The Cedar Falls IA tombstone gives William Elliott's birthdate as March 24th 1808. He died in 1866 leaving behind 5 young children with Jane B. Elliott. My quest is threefold: to find William Elliott's home county/town land and his family in Ireland or Scotland; records of a probable first marriage with a family name for the mother of the 3 immigrant Elliott's who traveled with William to NY in 1853; and the identity of their friends/family living in St. Lawrence Co. NY in 1853-55. I would also like to know what happened to the immigrant boy, Charles Elliott. Thank you in advance to anyone who can help me resolve these questions!
