My mother is from Plymouth, North Carolina, in Washington County. My mother's mother was Harriet Sutton Towe, daughter of Edward Sutton and Florance (or "Florence") Moore, who married in 1881. Edward Sutton was the son of Richard Sutton and Maranda (maiden name not known). Florance Moore is listed on the marriage license as the daughter of Stuart Moore and Harriet Moore. Stuart Moore is listed in the records as "Colored" and we are an African American family, but Florance Moore is known to have been the daughter of the slave master. (We assume the slave master was White, and the photograph we have of Florance Moore shows a woman who is White in appearance.) Any information about Edward Sutton, his father Richard, and their family would be appreciated. Also, are they connected to the Suttons of Pasquotank County (Elizabeth City)? My mother's father was Moses Towe, Jr. His father was Moses Towe, Sr., and his mother was Mary Eliza McCray. She was part Native American.
