This updates my previous message: I am seeking information on the parents of Evan SHELBY b 1767 PA?, d 1821, Wilkinson Co, MS. He married Mary DOANE 1797 at Natchez, MS. Church Parish - St Joseph of Baton Rouge, LA --[now] St Joseph Cathedral Parish: "SHELBY, Evan, a Calvinist of this region (Evan & Charity Shelby) m 4 Mar. 1797 at Natchez, Mary Doan, a Calvinist of this Government (Joseph & Anna Doan). Wit. Israel Smith, age 32 years & Luther Smith, age 22 years (SJO-84b, 10 -[St Joseph of Baton Rouge, book 84, p10]" Note-Probate and Bible records spell the name Doane.. One thing not quite clear yet is just where were they living?? The marriage record says "of this region" and that is not exactly clear if it meant the Baton Rouge area, or the Natchez area. It is not known just when and why or from where, that Evan Shelby came to this part of MS- Much of this area and time frame have been published -- Yet they have all somehow, managed to miss any mention of the Shelbys and related families, or make any mention of the records I have been able to find. The Woodville Republican: Mississippi's Oldest Existing Newspaper "The Mississippi Territory (M.T.) was established by an act of the United States Congress in 1798. In 1801, Washington, a little town six miles east of Natchez, was made the capital. In 1802, there were only 4 counties: Adams, Claiborne, Jefferson, and Wilkinson, and settlements were primarily along the Gulf Coast and the Mississippi River. Mississippi became a state in 1817..." The Journal of Wilkinson County History-The Confederacy and Wilkinson County: "Woodville was first settled near the turn of the nineteenth century and was incorporated as a town in 1811. A short time later it was chosen as the county seat of Wilkinson County, which was formed in 1802 in the extreme southwest corner of MS from an old teritory originally known as the county of Bourbon, and later as Adams County... The original Natchez Trace had it's point of origin at Fort Adams on the Mississippi River near Woodville when the Commander-in chief of the US Army, Gen James Wilkinson, for whom the county was named, completed a treaty with the Choctaw Indains to open a throughfare from Fort Adams northeast in order that supplies and soldiers could safely be moved to the fort located there... Near Woodville is the family home of Jefferson Davis, where his mother is buried in the family cemetery on Rosemont Plantation..." "Early Inhabitants of the Natchez District" of 1816- Evan is the only Shelby. He's still the only Shelby for Wilkinson Co, MS in 1820. (Migration routes) "...Travelers could take the Nashville Road completed in 1788. It linked Nashville to Knoxville, TN, and from there to the Great Valley Road through Virginia and connecting to Philadelphia, PA... "...The only overland route in the Old Southwest before 1806 was the Natchez Trace, an old Indian trail beginning at Natachez on the Mississippi River and from there, running northwest to Nashville... Most river traffic from the Ohio River to New Orleans was down-stream on flatboats or floating rafts. After completing their two month journey from Pittsburgh to New Orleans, the boatmen returned north on foot or horsback by way of the Natchez Trace... By 1796, the Natchez Trace from New Orleans to Nashville was extended to Lexington, Kentucky, connecting with an existing route to Limestone, Kentucky (now Maysville) on the Ohio River..."
