Query Text:

Jesse PONTING is shown in the 1841 census with the family of Absalom and Hannah (nee Tanner) PONTING in Highway, Wiltshire, England. However, the only suitable birth record I can find is for a John Ponting (1837), mother 'a singlewoman' Sarah with no father shown. Absalom/Hannah had a daughter Sarah and already had a son John (8 in 1841), so if this was the correct Sarah and Absalom/Hannah took in the baby John in 1837, then they would have called him by a different name. In 1851 Jesse is with his 'sister' Sarah, now married to William COLEMAN, and in 1860, Jesse married Mary Ann Dean - marriage certificate shows John PONTING as father. If this John PONTING was not a fiction, then which JP was he? If he is a fiction, then the baby's name, John, may give a clue as to the actual father but no further idea who this might be.
