I am trying to find the history/mystery of my ggrandmother. Her name was Margaret A. Crawford (middle initial may be E). She was born July 17 1851 at Effingham Illinois, Married Charles Marion Miller Jan 1 1867 at Effingham Illinois, and she died June 24, 1874 at East Lincoln, Polk county, Wisconsin. She supposedly died in childbirth, and her son died as well (infant). One child survived Permelia elizabeth Miller. Our Family tradition was always that Margaret was full blooded native American of two tribes the CHippewa and the sioux which are from the Wisconsin area. How she came to be born in Effingham Illinois we can't ascertain. There is a family on the 1860 effingham Il census that has a Margaret A. Crawford. Age is about 2 years off, but it could be her. COuld they have adopted her? Because if they were Indian they wouldn't be on the census right? This family is William C. Crawford and Wife Elizabeth Mahley Crawford (nee WInkler). I have one picture of Margaret and she is definatley Indian/ethnic looking. IF I could find anything on the Crawford family history in Effingham Illinois then maybe I could rule them out or confirm that they raised her. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
