I am searching for the burial site of Matthew B. Burgher, murdered March 16, 1876, while serving as the warden of the Utah Territorial Prison. Burgher was born in Ohio but his family moved to Hastings Township when he was a child. He enlisted in the Union Army in Dowiagic, Michigan. Following the war, Burgher went to Utah. There is no record of his burial in Utah. It is possible that his body was returned to Hastings Township for internment in a family plot. Barry County Death Records Microfilm #1008318 indicate that Burgher’s parents died in Hastings, but I have been unable to determine where they are buried. William H. Burgher, 76, farmer, of Hastings. Died Oct. 1, 1871. Cause: Drobatus. Anna Burgher, 81, widow, of Hastings. Died Sept. 21, 1880. Cause: Billion’s fever. Records show that Burgher’s sister Sarah Burgher Wolcott and her husband David are buried in the Riverside Cemetery, Hastings Township. I would appreciate any help locating the resting places of the Burghers. The Utah Department of Corrections is preparing to add Matthew’s name to the National Law Enforcement Memorial in Washington, D.C., in May 2004. In addition, we have a bronze memorial that we would like to place on his grave. Thanks. Robert Kirby 801/302-8258 | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
