I am seeking information on my great-grandmother's family. Her name was Emma Zumwalt, daughter of Joshua Zumwalt and Nancy Venable. The tradition handed down about the Zumwalts in our family is that they were Hessian mercenaries who came during the Revolutionary War and then changed to fight for America. For this and for service in the War of 1812 they received land grants in the wild frontier country of Missouri. She married in Louisiana, Missouri in about 1892 to Reinhard Sontheimer and my grandfather, Otto, was born there on August 29, 1894. If any one has information to connect my Zumwalts to a main family tree or to Fort Zumwalt, I would like to hear from them. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||
