Query Text:

My GG-GFather: Oliver O. Braxton, Sr.,(Born 1798), his wife: Darcus Miller Braxton & his Brother: Walter Holland are listed in the 1850 Henry County, Alabama census. This census indicates that all 3 were born in SCarolina. They migrated from SCarolina into Henry County during the early 1830 period(est)& further migrated from Henry County into Holmes County(CERROGORDO; located N. of Westville,Fl. - during 1850's(est). We have now determined name of the FATHER of Oliver O. Braxton, Sr., and his brother Walter Holland. He was John, his FATHER was Thomas, his FATHER was William Braxton; who was born either 1690 0r 1720 in either England or the Virginia Colony. He first appeared in Chatham County, NCarolina during 1740; where he lived and died there in 1771. Descendents of both Oliver O. Braxton, Sr., and of Walter Holland Braxton have been told by our parents/G-parents that we descended thru Carter Braxton. Virginia Signor of Declaration of Independence. At one time, during our search of several or more years, trying to obtain "more-proof" that we did or did not descend; I thought we had valed proof to affirm that we did. (Long/detailed story but to make it short); Since - during this period, we were unable to determine name of FATHER of my GG-GFather, I then went into the family of Carter. By 2 wives, Carter was FATHER of 18 children. Of the 18, only 6 males lived to adulthood. Any one of the first 3 sons could have been the FATHER of my GG-GFather. This based on their date of birth and their being between 30 and 40 years old - when my GG-GFather was born. His(Carters) first son was "George" - who followed in his FATHERS footsteps by also serving as member of House of Burgess in Williamsburg. He was a family man with wife and children and an important member of the Virginia Colony - and found no record of his migrating out of the Colony. His second son was "Corbin"; who was a lifetime confirmed batchlor; who was visiting in St. Augustine Florida when he died as result of "kick from a mule". His third son was "Carter, JR."; who was an attorney in the growing Virginia Colony. He was also a family man, with wife and children - with no record found of his migrating out of the Colony. All 3 of Carters sons were discounted as not being my GGG-GFather. Just recently, we have found the name of FATHER of my GG-GFather Oliver and his brother Walter Holland. He was John Braxton, his FATHER was Thomas, and his FATHER was William Braxton, born either 1690 or 1720 in either England or the Virginia Colony. He first appeared in Chatham County, NCarolina during 1740, and lived there until he died in 1771. NOTE: The only proof; other than verbal, that we had that we may have descended thru Carter; was a picture of him that was in the home of my GFather. When I opened the book that was written by Alonzo Dill about the personal and political life of Carter, there was a picture of Carter, in the book; the same exact copy of the original that my GFather had in his home in 1933. When I saw his picture in the book, I thought, for-a-long-time, that this was "proof enough" that we did descend thru him. Just recently, when we proved our family tree back to William Braxton, (who had no Carter connection), it was then assumed that this picture of Carter that was passed-down to my GFather by his FATHER, was a HOAX - which was "most likely" obtained by my GG-GFather as "bragging-rights" - prior to commencing their migration from SCarolina into Henry County, Al. during early 1830 period, and into the area of Cerrogordo, Holmes County, Fl. during the 1850 period. Wm. Braxton, 5088 Braxton Ln., Pace, Fl., 32571 -----------------------------------------------
