Hello, An Elliott Surname Project has just started at Family Tree DNA, and we are actively seeking participants. One goal of this project is to use DNA markers to identify different family groupings among males who bear the surname Elliott, or variations of that surname, such as Elliot, Eliot, Aliot, Elwood, Elwald, and so on. These DNA markers reside on the Y chromosome. They are passed from father to son, and change very little over time. This makes them an excellent tool for tracing paternal descent. Y chromosome DNA markers may also be used to suggest ethnic descent or "deep ancestry", as certain patterns in these markers prevail among particular population groups. The Elliott name has a diverse origin, and there are numerous legends about our ancestry. Some contend that the Elliotts were a Highland Clan that originated near the Spittal of Glenshee in Perthshire, and originally bore the Gaelic name of Elloch or the Pictish name of Elloth. Others believe that the Elliott family originated from an Anglo-Saxon family named Elewald, that lived in Northwest England in the thirteenth century. Still others insist that the Elliotts are descended from a Norman knight named William de Aliot. Still more have heard that the Elliotts were once Vikings, or Welshmen, or that they simply arose from many different families that all chose to name their sons after Elias, whose name means "The Lord is God". Some Elliotts may even be descended from the Roman warriors who guarded Hadrian's Wall. There are Elliotts whose ancestors came from England, from Scotland and from Ireland. One of the aims of the Elliott Surname Project will be to identify the possible origins of the Elliott family - or families - by comparing their DNA markers to those that are common among certain groups, such as Celts, Scandinavians, North Germans (i.e., Saxons) and others. Since most Elliotts regard the Scottish Borders as their ancestral home, a third goal of the study will be to compare the DNA markers of Elliott men with those of men descended from other Scottish Border Clans. These clans include Armstrong, Graham, Gray, Hall, Dixon, Nixon, Tait, Taylor, Henderson, Simpson, Little, Burns, Douglas, Kerr and others. We believe that there was significant interaction among these families, and that men descended from one clan occasionally acquired the name of another. Our purpose here will be to determine which of these clans are most closely related to the Elliotts, and which share a similar "deep ancestry". All males whose ancestors came from the British Isles (or, in the case of "Aliot", France as well), and who can claim paternal descent from any of the surnames mentioned above, are welcome to join. Please contact the administrators of the Elliott (and Border Reivers) Surname Project if you are interested - or if you have questions. You may contact James V. Elliott at jvance@tiac.net or David B. Strong at dbstrong@sos.net. Family Tree offers a substantial discount to new customers who join Family Tree DNA through any Surname Project. Once you contact us, we will send you a link to Family Tree DNA through which you can order a DNA sampling kit. A few seconds of swabbing the inside of your cheek will provide Family Tree with all the DNA they need to test your Y chromosome DNA markers. Once your DNA is tested, it will remain on file for twenty years. During that time you may use that DNA for any other purpose that you choose. You may compare your results with relatives - or with the data now available in several different public databases. You can also obtain the DNA markers that define your maternal line. We on the Elliott Surname Project will in the meantime be working hard to analyze the data and to present to you our findings, via both e-mail and our own dedicated website. The Elliott Surname Project promises to be a fascinating genealogical journey, and we sincerely hope that you will join us. James V. Elliott | |||||||||||||||||||||||||
