Query Text:

John and Anna (Hahn) Metz came from Penn. to Stephenson Co., Illinois. One of their children was James Frederick "Lewellen" Metz, b. approx. 1840-1843. In Penn. "Lewellen" married Mary Thompson Lawver (it looks like "Lawver" may have been a step father)... who was born in 1850 in Stephenson Co., Illinois. (These are my G.G.Grandparents. One of Lewellen and Marys daughters name was Edna Celesta Metz. (In the 1880 census the family is in Kansas and her name is written "Etney"). I'd found them only in Illinois and Nebraska before I saw the 1880 census. Also Lewellens parents are with them in Kansas. Edna Celesta Metz, at a young age, had four children (in which state I'm not sure, but it's said they were born in Nebraska). The twist to the story is that the father of her children and she were not married. According to one of my dads cousins that I've found the father was "one of the Lawvers". I have been searching thru the Lawvers (there are lots of them). There were alot in Stephenson Co., Illinois and also in Nebraska. The childrens names were: Albert, Lucretia (my grandmother...it seems she may have gone by Hattie), Edward and Ira Allen. Their mother, Edna, married Fred Watson in Nebraska in 1894 when her last child, Ira was a tiny little guy. Somehow Lucretia came out to Washington State, she married my grandfather, Hamilton Matier (who arrived in the U.S. from Ireland in 1902), on Lopez Island in the San Juan Islands, in Wa. State in 1914. They had three possibly four children, Helen, Albert, Edith Louise (maybe Edna Marie) and Arnold Edward (my dad). Lucretia died of TB in 1919 when my dad was only three mo. old. Almost NO information was left. Only Albert grew up with his father Hamilton...and it wasn't spoken of, it seems. I've been working on this for years. My dad had found, in a falling down house that no one had lived in for more than 30 years (???), an old silverware box, with a secret false back in it, that was holding my grandmother Lucretia/Hattie's special photographs and a few postcards. The cards are what gave me my first clues and over the years with a lot of detective work (genealogy) I have found very interesting things. But, I cannot find Lucretia/Hattie in 1900. Her mother had started a new family with Fred Watson and her brothers are living with Lewellen and Mary, her grandparents. (the brothers are using Watson for their last name). One last thing. I have found Charles Lawver (born 1890 in Nebraska) on Lopez Island (same tiny place Lucretia and Hamilton are living and had been married) Charles is from a Lawver family that had also been from Stephenson Co., Illinois, then settled in Nebraska. (Samuel Lawver, his father moved from from Nebraska, after he retired, and settled in Montana. Seems clear this is Lucretia's Lawver family...but there are many. Not just within this one large family, but cousins. Does ANYONE have any ideas? Thank you for listening, Cherie
