I am searching for information on a branch of the draper family from the caledonia area in haldimand county, ontario, canada. My great grandfather was thomas william or william thomas draper. He was wesleyan methodist and baptismal records show daughter mary ann born oct.22,1863 in wisconsin and baptized on apr.6,1866 in oneida, ontario by rev.j.briggs.Also baptized that same day was 2nd daughter rhoda elizabeth.Baptismal records show she was born in wisconsin nov.18,1865,however 1881 canadian census doesn't show mary ann at all and shows rhoda as being born in ontario in 1866,the year she was baptized.Thomas was married to elizabeth snyder of german background born in the states in 1845 or 1846.Her family is believed to be from pa and were either amish or mennonite.I don't know if they married in the states or canada since I can't find a record anywhere. They must have lived in wisconsin at least between oct 1863 and nov. 1865{the girls birthdates} but I can't locate any records since I don't have any idea what county they were in.They were also parents of seven other children showing up as born in oneida. Amey jane who married a william wesley stickney in 1902 and had a son ken, salomie who married john hull and lived in the bridgeburg area in welland county, later living in st.catherine with her son barclay, eliza who married a widower named robert book in 1906 and had a son stan,Isabelle who stayed in the caledonia area and married robert wren,my grandfather thomas william who went to normal school in north bay ontario to become a teacher after being injured in an explosion in the bakery he worked in losing the use of one arm leaving him unable to continue work as a baker. Thomas later married minnie ethel fleming of kincardine ontario and settled in windsor ontario with their four sons james whitney draper, thomas lloyd draper , robert draper, and glen chalmers draper. Thomas also had two younger sisters glen and bert who were born after 1881 and never married.Bert also moved to windsor and taught as a music teacher at the old victoria grade school in windsor. .The drapers were originally from england and came to the states around the 1700's. they are said to have entered the country in boston and supposedly migrated to pennsylvania, possibly wisconsin and new york, finally landing in the caledonia, haldimand county, ontario canada area. They may be connected to the new york branch of the family who were very secretive about their family background because in the late 1800's they were trying to lay claim to an inheritance of an estate in england and were afraid other draper members would also try to claim it.Please contact me if you know anything about this branch of the family .Thank you. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
