I am seeking information on Laban (Labon, Labun. Laburn)Pitts who was born in the Newberry District, S. C. in either 1801 or 1809. In 1830, his name appears in the federal census in Troup Co. GA. No documentation having to do with him from his birth until 1830 has been found. It is suspected that Laban is a son of James Pitts (abt 1780 in Newberry Dist., S. C) and Kisiah(Kaziah) Sammons (b. abt. 1780 in Newberry Dist., S. C.) ; however, documenting this has proved impossible to date. His name appears on no census associated with this family. James and Kisiah are reported to have moved their family (Elihu, 1800, Newberry Dist., S.C.; Lousia (abt 1806, S.C.) Isaac (1808, SC.); Nathan (1809); Rebecca (10 Mar. 1810); Amy Laburn to GA. in the early 1800s. Matilda (1816) and Carrington (1822) were born in Troup Co., GA. after their relocation. James married Elizabeth Whatley in 1831(daughter of Archie Whatley and Fannie Sorrells) in GA and died in 1836. In GA, Laban was often linked to Elihu Pitts, living as neighbors to him, joining in a conflict with Elihu against the Whatley family over the estate of James Pitts, etc. In 1850, Laban appeared in the federal census, in Carroll Co. GA, 11th District. At this time his wife was listed Susan (Whatley??)and their children--Hamilton (1833), Caroline (1836), B? (1839), John (1841), Isaac (1843), and Missouri (1844). In 1860 Laban was a teacher (reported to have taught in the Oak Level Academy with son John L.) who was living alone in Haralson Co. GA, and a neighbor of Warren Hart and his son and daughter, Thomas and Caroline. By 1870 Laban had relocated to Cleburne Co. Ala. and was living with Caroline Hart Pitts, now his wife. He was reported to be a farmer at that time. Children were listed as: John M.(b. Ala. 1861); James M. (b. Ala. 1863); Lilla(b. Ala, 1865) and Romaldus (b. Ala. 1869). It is thought that Laban is the grandfather of these children while the biological parents were Montgomery Pitts and Nancy Grayson. This, too, cannot be sufficiently documented at present. Laban Pitts no longer appears in the federal census after 1870. However, in 1880 Caroline Pitts (now Pardon)is listed as living with John M.(Montgomery) Pitts, wife, Nettie, brothers, James M. (Monroe)and Freeman Romaldus. In 1900 Caroline Pitts Pardon is found living in Lamar Co. TX with son, Romaldus and wife, Reyna and their two daughters, Lila May and Lois. Any information concerning Laban's name, parentage and year of birth would be appreciated as well as any other facts pertaining to his life, marriages, children, death, etc. Several researchers of this line are "stuck" and would be grateful for any help in getting us moving again. Please contact Beverly at bjre8@cableone.net with any information you might have. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
