Mary Vincenta Butler's birth was proclaimed by her father, Vincent, in a letter written to his cousin on 5 Aug 1839 from Carrollton, Carroll County, Mississippi Author: Robin Butler Daviet Date: 7 Nov 2004 1:37 PM GMT Surnames: Butler, Lowe, Pickens, Baskin, Noble, Merriwether, Toombs, Settle Classification: Query Mary Vincenta BUTLER was born 31 July 1839 in Carrollton, Carroll Co, Mississippi. Her parents were Vincent D. BUTLER born @1812 in Warren Co, Kentucky to James and Charity LOWE BUTLER and Mary Rose BASKIN born @1814 to Thomas Stuart and Mary NOBLE BASKIN. They married 1 May 1837 in Holmes County, Mississippi. In October 1837, Vincent was admitted to the bar of the fledgling county of Carroll, Mississippi. From letter dated 5 August 1839: "My wife is well - she had a daughter on the 31st inst - it is our first born, and a fine child weighing 9 lbs., named Mary Vincenta. My elder brother William L. Butler is now residing with me in the same town." Sadly, their first born became their only child. Within two years Vincent had moved to Pensacola, Florida in search of a warmer more healthy climate for his family. He had heard the area was promising and in need of good attorneys. He died there in 1841. It is unknown if his two Mary's had gone with him or were awaiting his getting settled before joining him in Florida. Mary Rose BASKIN BUTLER apparently moved back home with her parents or near them when she was widowed because she was living in Holmes County, Mississippi again when she married a second time. This marriage was to Israel Wilson PICKENS in 1845. Israel was a widower. Children from this second marriage were: 1. Israel W. PICKENS b. @1846 in Holmes Co, Mississippi; d. @1854, Holmes Co, Mississippi. 2. Mattie Jane PICKENS b. 14 Feb 1849 in Holmes Co, Mississippi; d. 28 June 1936 Colorado City, Texas; m. 1st B. H. SETTLE 16 December 1873 in Marshall Co, Mississippi, 2nd John Williams MERRIWETHER 1880 in Holmes Co, Mississippi. 3. Louisa Baskin PICKENS b. 12 Oct 1851 in Holmes Co, Mississippi; m. Calvin Montgomery TOOMBS 21 November 1872 in Holmes Co, Mississippi 4. Mary Lou PICKENS b. After. 1852 in Texas 5. Hennie PICKENS b. After. 1854 in Texas 6. Rose PICKENS b. After. 1856 in Texas All three of the daughters born in Texas, died young. Apparently Texas did not work out well for the family. They were back in Holmes Co, Mississippi when Israel wrote his will on 25 February 1868. Mary Rose died 24 March 1886 in Holmes Co, Mississippi. What ever happened to Mary Vincenta BUTLER? Did she take Isaac's last name when her mother remarried? Mary was only 2 when her father died and 5 when her mother married again. Did she marry in Texas before her mother and step-father moved back to Mississippi? Does she show up or is she mentioned in any records of her half siblings? Are there any family members out there who can help me find Mary Vincenta BUTLER? Stuggling with many questions, Robin Butler Daviet | |||||||||||||||||||||||||
