Query Text:

Louis & Joe Greenberg - lost family My grandfather, Louis Greenberg, whom I met only once in the 60's when I was a teenager, may have been was born Louisiana on in the late 1890's. He may have grown up in Texas or in New Orleans, LA, I don't know for sure. For all we know, he may have been from Philadelphia and lied. He died approx. in 1976. He may have died in or near New Orleans where he spent most of his time from what we have gathered. My mom says she remembers being told he died in Texas and was burried in New Orleans. I had a few post cards from Mississippi when I had some correspondence w/him around 1971. Louis had at least one brother that I am aware of named Jo, Joe, Josef or Joseph middle intial M from what I can make out. I have a photo of his brother, looks like it is signed "Jo M Greenberg" (but I am not positive, could it be John??) and is from 1928. It was a souvenir photo on the beach in Miami. Louis said he was a police officer or sheriff (??) in Louisiana, maybe New Orleans, but not likely. He had a lot of trouble with the law, even spent some time in Moyemensing Prison in Philadelphia, PA possibly in the mid 1920's, maybe for stealing a car. He also said he had a metal plate in his head from WW2, said he was in Hawaii when the Pearl Harbor attack occurred. Again not likely, he would have been too old. My grandmother told me Louis lied about everything. Either his brother or his father, and I think it was his father, was a lawyer. Louis married my grandmother, Lena, in Philadelphia and had my father, Raymond S. Greenberg in 1925. Louis also had an illegitimate son in Philly about the same time my father was born in Philadelphia. Louis abandoned my grandmother and father ( at the age of four) vanishing off the face of the earth until he found my father in the early 1960's by calling all the Greenberg's in the Philadelphia phone book. He came to our home but the relationship could not be salvaged. My father thought his father was dead for 30 some years and could not forgive Louis for abandoning him and my grandmother and the hardships it caused. **I know there were relatives to Louis in Maryland because in the 70's my father had some phone contact with an Uncle, possibly another brother to Louis or maybe even Jo himself in Maryland. What ever they told my father, in about 1978 he went to New Orleans to find Louis, but he had passed away. This is the sum of all I know. If any of this rings any bells, please feel free to share! fuzybuttluv@yahoo.com .. Terry Greenberg
