George Calvin Roe, born 1850 in Virginia, and his wife, Nancy America Jarvis,b. 1849, Louisiana, resided in Southwestern Arkansas in 1880, principly the town of Magnolia or in the near area. George and Nancy had several children, Willie, James Franklin, Mary Ellen, and Barbara. Mary Ellen Roe married James Albert Hale Sr. Their children were Bessie, James Albert Hale Jr, and a set of twins, Dessie and Tessie. Dessie, also known as Dessie Virginia Hale. Dessie and her husband, Robert Dodson, brought two children into the world, Frances and Mary. Frances brought five children into the world, and among them, I married her youngest, Emma. Frances, my mother-in-law, was basically raised by her grandfather, James Albert Hale Sr and his second wife, Marzee, or "Granny" as she was known. Frances said her grandfather and grandmother were fabled farmers in the community and raised chickens, ducks, geese, and other fowl, pigs, cows, planted peanuts, and other crops. Frances loved the peanut butter, freshly made by Marzee. James Albert Hale Sr fit the description of his grandchildren and even great-grandchildren, as kind, industrious, and charitable. James Albert Hale Sr's first wife and the mother of his children was Mary Ellen Roe, the daughter of George Calvin Roe and Nancy America Jarvis of Arkansas. Family legend indicates Mary Ellen took her own life in 1915. By what means, or what reason is sealed by her five deceased children. Barbara Roe Cox, Mary Ellen's sister, took the twins, Dessie and Tessie, into her care and raised them to adulthood. I have pictures of James A. Sr, James A Jr. Mary Ellen Roe Hale, Bessie Hale, and the twins as newborn infants which dates the picture late 1906. Little is known of Mary Ellen Roe Hale's life. However, death by her own hand, led to her burial outside the family plot and the absence of a headstone. In the 1990's, Frances Dodson Sherard, her granddaughter made a small headstone for Mary Ellen so she would not be forgotten. Mary Ellen's children have varying opinions as to why this was done. Based on what was told at the 1985 Hale Family Reunion by Uncle Jim, his mother's family came directly from Denmark, but did not say exactly when. Dessie Virginia, his sister, said she understood that the Roe Family was a mix of Cherokee Indian and Irish. Varying opinions on this by surviving family members have not been checked out. I attended the Hoss Cemetery in Hosston, LA, with my mother-in-law (who is also buried there) and saw the small headstone. Apparently, her mother, Dessie Virginia, told her enough about her Mary Ellen Roe Hale, to merit more recognition than she received. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
