Looking for information on the American and Scottish ancestry of Willis Sleath, late 19th century / early 20th century resident of Ferndale, Sullivan County, NY. Willis Sleath, my maternal grandfather, was married to Clara Hannah Bailey, and operated a dairy called Rose Hill Farm at Ferndale, in Sullivan County, NY. Clara Bailey's line includes Palmers. Willis' mother was Hannah Maria Sanford. Willis and Clara are buried at Fulton Cemetary in Bether Township in Sullivan County I am specifically looking for verification of Willis' grandfather, supposedly a John Leath (Leith?), who emigrated to America in the 1740s-50s (or a little later) in the wake of the failed Jacobin attempt to return the Stuarts to the English throne. Upon arrival in America, this John Leath (Leith?) supposedly clanged the spelling of his name to Sleeth, which eventually was altered to Sleath I know that some Scottish immigrants came to New York City in the late 1790s and moved on to become very early settlers in Sullivan County; I am trying to establish a link between my grandfather and these settlers, as well as learn verifiable background information about my Scottish ancestry. Any other collateral information about Sleaths,Sleeths, Leiths, Baileys, Palmers, or Sanfords will be greatly appreciated. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
