Looking for descendants of John W. Cole and wife Mary Elizabeth Painter of Lincoln County, TN--moved to Independence County, AR 1860. Most of their children moved on to OK, one to TX. Their children were Franklin Price Cole born about 1861 m. Alice Nora Pierce, daughter of James M. Pierce of KY and Catherine Ryan of IN; William Henry Cole m. Hester Tosh; Jacob A. Cole m. Elizabeth Francis, daughter of John Adcock Francis and Mary Baldwin from TN and then Itawamba Co., MS; John W. Cole m. Nancy Jane Francis, sister of Elizabeth; George Cole died about age 11 buried Sherrill Cemetery, I presume in AR; Lawrence J. Cole m. Kittie Marlin and moved from AR to OK--died from gangrene after being shot in the leg; Hepsey Cole m. Henry Spark Wren in AR, later divorced him and moved from Oklahoma to Texas; Sarah Malinda "Sallie" Cole m. Andrew Newton Wren, brother of Henry S. Wren--moved AR>OK>TX; Fannie Cole m. J. R. Dawson. Parents of John W. Cole were John Cole and Nancy (Graves?) of Lincoln County, TN. Elizabeth Painter descended from William Painter and Hepsey Epps, daughter of Lawrence Epps and Elizabeth Creighton, also of LCT. The elder John Cole was born about 1795 in NC and always seemed to live near James D. Cole and wife Eglantine Leftwich in Lincoln County, TN, although I can't find a connection. John and Nancy Cole's children married inviduals with surnames: Epps, Armstrong, Painter, Cummins. John Cole's parents were most likely Francis Cole and Elizabeth (possibly Watkins?) Francis Cole, who died 1818 Richmond County, NC, had sons John Cole and Francis Cole Jr., daughters Rachel Cole who m. a Watkins, Sarah Cole who m. Alexander Oliver, Martha "Patsy" Cole who married John Stricklin in 1802, possibly a daughter (or first wife) Agatha and a granddaughter Elizabeth "Betsy." Francis Cole owned land he referred to in his will as "the Snead tract" and "the Watkins tract." His inlaws may have been William Watkins and Keziah Snead (daughter of Israel Snead) of Richmond, NC. Francis Cole's will was signed by Kenneth McKenzie and John Snead. After 1820 Francis Cole Jr., John Stricklin and Alexander Oliver can be found buying land in Lincoln County, TN, in close proximity to each other and sometimes on the very same day. This Cole family migrated from Anson/Richmond NC to Lincoln County, TN, to Independence County, AR--where my branch remained for about 60 years, in Union Township. My great-grandfather Franklin Price Cole "Babe" lived in Cushman, AR. I would very much like to correspond with others related to this Cole family. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||
