LESLIE ELLIS OF MARGERYMORE, Co. KILDARE, IRELAND the following pedigree is based on that found in Burke's Irish Landed Gentry (1959) 1. Sir Thomas Ellis of Wyham. 2. His 5th son, John Ellis. 3. His eldest son, “Thomas Ellis of Monaghan, Gentleman” was born in about 1650, the eldest son who was himself the fifth son of. Thomas settled in Ireland during the latter years of Charles II. He was one of the names on James II’s Act of Attainder. He. He was married twice and had numerous children by both marriages. His son and heir Francis was a child by the first wife whose name is unrecorded. His second wife was a widow, Elizabeth White, daughter of John Harpur. Thomas died on 9th August 1714 (George I) and was succeeded by his son, 4. Francis Ellis of Monaghan, born 1683, m 28 Aug 1715, Joan Maxwell (d. 27 March 1729) and d. 15 June 1773 having had, with others, 5. a) Henry Ellis, Governor of Georgia & Nova Scotia, Vice Admiral, High Sherioff & Provost Marshal of Grenada, Tobago St. Vincent & Dominica, for whom Ellis Island is named? FRS. b. 29 Aug 1721, dunm at Naples 21 Jan 1806. b) Robert of Draper Hill, Lisnakea, Co. Fermanagh, b. 11 Jan 1726, m. Penelope (d. July 1823), dau of Rev. Alexander Leslie of Aghnaloo, Co. Fermanagh, and died March 1782, having had issue 4 sons, 4 daus. The Rev. Alexander (d. circa 1762) was son of Rev. William Leslie (also died in about 1762) of Glebhill, Co. Fermanagh, Rector of Aghavea for 50 years. William was son of Alexander Leslie (b. 1657) of Pitcaple and descended from Alexander Leslie, 4th Baron Pitcaple and from the house of Bartolf. Robert’s children were: 6. a) Francis (1772 – 1842) of The Royal Crescent in Bath married Mary, dau of William Kilbee and had three sons and three daughters, none of whom seem to have lived very long. Their third and youngest son, Robert Leslie Ellis was a distinguished mathematician and scholar, a Fellow of Trinity College Cambridge based at Anstey Hall, Cambridge, and died unmarried on 12 May 1859 aged 42. The eldest daughter Everina Frances m. 1stly 20 Dec 1834 Sir Gilbert Affleck, 5th Bart, who dsp in Nov 1854. She married secondly 1 July 1858 the Rev William Whewell, DD, Master of Trinity College Cambridge, who she must have met through her brother (who died the following year). She d. 1 April 1865;Whewell followed on 6 March 1866. b) Henry, of whom presently. c) Robert (1775 – 1799), aged 24. d) Lieutenant Alexander Ellis, 4th Regt (1776 – 1796), aged 20. e) Jane m. Rev. William Maxwell, DD, of Falkland, Co. Monaghan, and d. 1847. Hence, herself and sister Isabella perpetrating Monaghan connection another generation… f) Sarah dunm 1809. g) Isabella m. William Mayne of Freame Mount, Co. Monaghan and d. v. young 1 Nov 1795, leaving issue. He d. 25 Nov 1817. h) Penelope m. 29 April 1818 Rev Francis Lawrence Gore, DD, and d. St Patrick’s Day 1848. The second son, Henry, was born on 9th May 1774. On 12 Dec 1810, the 36 year old married Elizabeth Cupples, dau of Thomas Cupples, DD, of Lisburn, Co. Antrim. He lived at Mount Stewart in Co. Dublin and d. 27 April 1848; she died 10 June 1879. October 1837 was a bad month. They had issue. 7. a) Henry (1812 – 22 May 1835), aged 23. b) Robert Francis, of whom presently. c) Alexander (1825 – 22nd Oct 1837), aged 12. d) Thomas Cupples Ellis of St. Austin’s, Gorey, Co. Wexford, JP. He was born 13 Feb 1829 (year of Emancipation). On 21 June 1860 he married Augusta Catherine (died 1 Nov 1899), dau of Rev Thomas Burne Lancaster, Rector of Grittleston, Wilts. Acc to Burkes, he d. 20 Aug 1855 but this doesn’t add up as sons born in 1860s. They had four sons and two daughters. The eldest Henry Herbert Maxwell Ellis was born in 1861 and, in July 1885, married Louise Van Metres; their son Henry and daughter Catherine settled in Sacramento, California. The third son, Ernest Ellis, JP, FSI (22 Oct 1867 – 12 Feb 1947) succeeded to St. Austin’s and m. (4th July 1894, American Independence) Harriet Johnson-Smyth, dau of Matthew Johnson-Smyth of Ingram, Lisburn, Co. Antrim. The fourth son Lt Commander Arnold Claud Lancaster Ellis, RNR,(1869 – 27 Feb 1948) married (1899) Georgina Sullivan, dau of Rev. James Sullivan, Rector of Askeaton, Co. Limerick, but their two sons Henry and Arnold died young and the daughter Florence never married. The eldest daughter Emily m. (1894) Frederick Adolphus Brabazon Turner of Clonattin, Co. Wexford and died 6 March 1852. The younger daughter Violet m. (1908) Rev Ernest O’Connor and d. 19 Aug 1954. e) Theophilus, died aged 6 on 18th Oct 1837, a week before his elder brother Alexander and sister Sarah so must have been some class of a bug in the winter of ’37. f) Jane m. 21 Feb 1831 Rev. Isaac Ashe, Rector of Kildress, Co. Tyrone, and had issue. He d. 22 March 1888. g) Penelope m. (10 June 1841) Rev Richard Christie, Rector of Castlecombe, Wiltshire (where her sister in law Augusta hailed from) and d. 17 Dec 1908 leaving issue; he d. 8 Dec 1888. h) Elizabeth m. (22 April 1846) Rear Admiral John Adams, Gov of Ascension Island and d. 11 May 1891, leaving issue; he d. 17 Dec 1766. i) Sarah Maria, died young 24 Oct 1837. Robert Francis Ellis of Sea Park (now called Magherymore), Co. Wicklow, JO, High Sheriff for Co. Monaghan (1867) and Wicklow (1868). He was born on 22nd October 1822. When he was 15, three of his siblings died of flu. He studied at Trinity College Dublin (MA). On 25th March 1851 he married Elizabeth Mary (d. 28 March 1883), only daughter of Dublin barrister James Hawkins (1797 – 1880) and Isabella Law (dau of Robert Law, so ask Robert) of St. Fenton’s, Co. Dublin. The Hawkins were a distinguished family who settled in Ulster in the 17th century. Among them were two Ulster King of Arms, William Hawkins (1698 – 1736) and his son, John (1701 – 1758). Elizabeth’s grandfather was the Rev. John Hawkins, MA, (1757 – 1841) of Dublin and her grandmother was Anne Montgomery of The Hall, Co. Donegal. One of her great uncles was Admiral Sir James Hawkins-Whitshed, 1st Bart, (1761 – 1849) of Killincarrig, Greystones, Co. Wicklow, Admiral of the Fleet 1844 who was awarded a gold medal for his distinguished services off Cape St Vincent and created a Baron of the Kingdom of Hanover by King Ernest in 1843.Another uncle, the Rev. Thomas Hawkins, DD, (1766 – 1850) was appointed Dean of the Chapel Royal in Dublin in 1831. Elizabeth died in 28th Match 1883 and Robert on 12th January 1899. They had issue: 8. a) Henry, of whom presently. b) Robert Leslie Ellis, b. 10 Sept 1853, m. 23 Aug 1884 Emily Eleanor (d. 25 Aug 1910), dau of Col. Robert George Archibald Hamilton Gun-Cuninghame, DL, of Mount Kennedy, Co. Wicklow, and dsp 25 Sept 1903. c) Francis Leslie Ellis died 22 Dec 1878, aged 23. d) Alexander Ellis was born in November 1856 and died unmarried in South America. e) William Whewell Leslie carried the name of his cousin Everina Whewell but died unmarried on 10 June 1906 aged 47. f) Isabella died young in 1857. g) Emily was born 15 Sept 1864 and m. (6 Jan 1897) to Richard Middleton Hill, BA, Chief Constable of Cornwall, son of Rev. RH Hill, DCL, Canon of Bangor (anything to Sir Rowland?) and d. 6 April 1955, leaving issue one son and two daughters. He d. 26 May 1939. The eldest son, Lt Col Henry Leslie Ellis of Margerymore (formerly Sea Park), Co. Wicklow, JP, DL, HS (1902), FSA, FRGS, Lt Col Royal Bucks Hus, formerly Major Inniskilling Dragoons. Born 10 Feb 1852. Educ Harrow and RMC. Married (7 April 1894) Margaret Rolleston, dau of Rev. Septimus Rolleston, Rector of St. Minver, Cornwall. He died 12 April 1918 (after war effort?); she died 13 May 1931. They had issue three sons and a daughter: 9. a) Francis Rolleston Leslie, b. 14 Jan 1895, dunm 1 Nov 1939 – why? b) John, of whom presently. c) Charles Stanhope Ellis, b. 28 Nov 1904, m. 6 April 1940 Joan Mary, dau of Arthur Nash of Knightsbridge and had a daughter Margaret, born 12th Sept 1944. d) Joan Leslie, b. 26 Feb 1898, m. 1 Dec 1921, Robert Kenneth Atthill Kennedy of Leskinfere, Gorey, Co. Wexford, son of Rev. Mervyn le Ban Kennedy of Kilmeaden Rectory, Co. Waterford. John Lancelot Leslie-Ellis of Seaview House, Co. Wicklow, formerly of Magherymore, Co. Wicklow, was born on 4th March 1902 and educated at Castle Park, Dalkey, and Woodseat, Staffordshire. On 24th April 1928 he married his cousin Joyce Hilda, yr dau of Capt Herbert Reginald Montgomery Hawkins, JP, of St. Fenton’s, Co. Dublin. Prior to his fathers’ death, John lived at Cherryhill, Kilmacanogue, Co. Wicklow. They had issue: 10. a) Henry Terence Lancelot Ellis, b. 10 June 1941. b) Juliet Mary, b. 26 June 1929, m. 1 Oct 1952, Instructor Lt Cmdr. Jack Cottam, B. Sc., RN, of Dunferline, son of Jack Cottam of 121 Greyhound Road, N17, and had a son Anthony James Lslie Cottam, born 3rd July 1956. c) Valerie Gillian, b. 9 May 1936.
