Query Text:

Mary S. Blackwell, full-blood Cherokee Indian, born 10/1854 in Henderson County, TN. I have been searching for my Great-Great-Grandmother Mary S. Blackwell’s Indian heritage. The Tennessee Genealogical Society gave me your address and information. My Uncle Fred McKenzie, who is a retired School teacher, living in Dallas, Texas, remembers Mary S. Blackwell (who was married to our Great Grandfather John Chandler) Indian-chanting when she was sick and dying. Fred was told that Mary and her family hid from the military when they came through Tennessee on the “Trail of Tears” to take them from Tennessee to Oklahoma Territory. Fred also said she and her family were ashamed of their Indian heritage. I have photos of Mary S. Blackwell Chandler and her mother which I have photos of them, and you really notice the Indian features. I know the following: 1. Mary Blackwell was born in 10/1854 in Henderson County, Tennessee to James and Susanah Blackwell. She married William "Bud" Chandler in approx. 1865. In the 1880 census, Bud Chandler was 25 years old and Mary was 24, Jim was 5, John was 4 and Susie was 2 weeks old. At the time of the 1900 Census Bud and Mary were 45 years of age, living in McNairy County. Their 2 older sons, James and John were married and the other children were at home. At the time of the 1910 TN census, 11 year old Walker was enumerated with his elder brother Jim. It is probable that he went to his eldest brother right after their father died. Mary Chandler came to Oklahoma with all of her children. At the time of the 1920 Tennessee census, she was located in Hardin County. When she did come to Oklahoma she lived with her daughter Addie and Steve Cook and is buried in the Luther, Oklahoma Cemetery, date unknown. 2. Mary S. Blackwell married William A. “Bud” Chandler, dob 3/1855 but don’t have wedding date as Tennessee Courthouse burned. 3. Mary and William had children: (1) James E. “Jim” Chandler, dob 10/12/1874 who died 12/29/1960 ; (2) (My Great-Grandfather) John Robert Chandler, dob 6/21/1876 in Middleton, Tennessee who died 8/1/1960 in Guthrie, Oklahoma; (3) Cinthia Chandler, dob 1858; (4) John Quincy Chandler, dob 8/10/1960; (5) Mary Susan “Susie” Chandler (6) Walter N. Chandler (7) Nora M. Chandler and (8) Walter C. Chandler. 4. My Great Grandfather John Robert Chandler moved from Decatur County Tennessee around 1910 and then to Luther, Oklahoma in 1918.
