Looking for Gouverneur (various spellings of his given name)Maurice Rainey, (b 1835 d 12/24/1884), New York. Who are his parents and siblings? He was (probably) married to Cornelia Torrey (m 1853 as posted in "Early Records of Marriages Dutch Reformed Church, Montgomery, NY 1829-1858") then to Frances Josephine Dean (m 1869 b1843 d June, 1928). With Cornelia there's one known son, John (b c 1879) and with Frances (aka Fannie)four children, Frank (b 1873), Harry (b 1875), Nellie (b 1877) and May (b c 1879). I find Gouvernear in the 1850 census with the John S. Shafer family as a laborer. This was Orange County, NY and the spelling is Gouvenear Reany. I find him in NYC in the 1860 with Cornelia and John. I do not know what happened to wife and child after that date. From 1867 thru 1879 he owns his own business as a sign and banner painter in Manhattan, NY. This was confirmed with the city directory of that period. I find him in Oneonta, Otsego, NY in the 1880 census and the occupation is listed as Portrait Painter. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
