I'd appreciate hearing from anyone that may have info on the following KEMP LINES. GENERATION 1: My GREAT GREAT GRANDPARENTS: Edward P. Kemp born about 1804 in Pennsylvania died Unknown. Married Maria Hoy born 8/8/1808 in Maryland. She was the daughter of Robert Hoy ,Sr. b.1/26/1783 at Hagerstown,Maryland, died 2/4/1836 in Plymouth,Ohio & Alice Tarlton. Per HOY FAMILY BIBLE RECORDS they spelled my GGGrandmother's name with an H, but in Census ,IGI, & Tombstone it's spelled as MARIA. I also find her maiden name spelled HOY,HOEY, & HOYT by people in the same family. MARIAH HOY & EDWARD P. KEMP married 7/16/1829. IGI records at the LDS website has EDWARD P. KEMP & MARIA HOEY married July 16, but incorrect year as 1929 instead of 1829. However it does have their son, my Great Grandfather,FRANCIS MARION KEMP born in Crawford Co.,Sandusky Twp.,Ohio in 1847 which is correct, so I'm sure the 1929 was just a type error. The 1850 Crawford Co.,Sandusky Twp.,Ohio Census Pg.392 has this family listed as the following: EDWARD P. KEMP-46yrs. Farmer Born in PA. [abt. 1804] MARIA KEMP-42yrs. Born MD.[8/8/1808] ALICE-16yrs. Born Ohio [1834] HARRIET-12yrs. Born Ohio [1838] MARIA-10yrs Born Ohio [1840] CATHARINE-6yrs. Born Ohio [1844] FRANCIS MARION-3yrs. Born Ohio [9/18/1847] In the past year my father told me that many years ago his father, Marion Glenn Kemp, son of Francis Marion Kemp sent him a picture of his Grandparents ( my GGGrandparents) that he had written on the back of,saying " this is who you're named after, E. Pennington Kemp,& my Grandma, a HOYT. My Father's name is PENNINGTON DAVID KEMP, so from this I assume my GGGrandfather's middle intial P. stood for PENNINGTON, making his full name,EDWARD PENNINGTON KEMP. Also per HOY Family Bible records sent to me by Bonnie Hoy of Michigan: One of Mariah Hoy Kemp's younger sister's, Harriet Hoy b. 1810 married JACOB KEMP 4/29/1830. We wonder if Jacob & Edward P. Kemp may have been brothers that married sisters, but we do not have proof. The HOY Bible records tell nothing more of these 2 KEMP LINES ,but in the same 1850 Crawford Co. Sandusky Twp.,Ohio Census that I find my GGGrandparents Edward P. Kemp & Maria Hoy Kemp, I find Harriet & Jacob, so I assume if not brothers they may be cousins: Jacob M. Kemp-39yrs. Farmer Born Ohio [Abt. 1811] Harriet Kemp-40yrs. Born MD. [1810] Hulda-19yrs. Born Ohio [1831] Joseph-16yrs Born Ohio [1834] Narcissa-14yrs. Born Ohio [1836] George W.-4yrs. Born Ohio [1846] Adaline 1yr. Born Ohio [1849] Sometime between 1850 in Crawford Co.,Sandusky Twp.,Ohio & 1862 my GGGrandparents moved to Allegheny Co.,East Elizabeth,PA. Per Hoy Bible Records Mariah died there 2/19/1862. We found that she is buried in Allegheny Co.,West Elizabeth,PA. in Lobbs-Run Cemetery. Tombstone says: MARIA KEMP wife of EDWARD E. KEMP ( don't know why it has middle initial E. instead of P., could just be old marks on the old Tombstone that makes it appear to be an E.) It has the death date correct & in the right area, so it's her. Also buried near is a CATHARINE L. KEMP that died March 7th. The year of death & the rest is unreadable. I don't know if it's Edward & Maria's daughter & she never married or if it's perhaps the mother of Edward P. Kemp? There's alot of deteriorated Tombstones that are unreadable, but it doesn't appear that Edward P. Kemp is buried there. He would've been 58yrs. old when Maria died & since my Great Grandfather,Francis Marion Kemp was only 15yrs. old at the time perhaps Edward remarried & left to Homestead farther west? GENERATION 2: My GREAT GRANDPARENTS: Francis Marion Kemp born Crawford Co.,Sandusky Twp.,Ohio 9/18/1847.His parents moved to Pennsylvania when he was young & he went to German singing school there & learned how to play the violin. My family & half of the village of Marblehead,Ohio on Lake Erie has many of her oil paintings of the Marblehead Lighthouse & Lake scenes. Marion Glen Kemp was called "JACK" & was a Carpenter in Ohio. He died 1/15/1964 in Oskie,Kansas near his daughter Marjorie Kemp Freer who I received all my info from. 6) Jessie Esther Kemp b. 7/10/1893. Died after Dec. 25,1976.Never married. She took care of her parents on the Homestead until they died. 7) Hazel Mae Kemp b. 11/13/1895 Married a Widower, Edward Quinn in 1920 & raised his daughter as her own. The following paragraphs are from a letter my deceased Aunt Marjorie Kemp Freer sent me in 1979 talking about my Great Grandparents Francis Marion Kemp born 1847 in Ohio & wife Nancy Margaret Gaumer born 1855 in Iowa, & the homestead they carved out for themselves in Redington,Nebraska. " The Homestead was in Redington, Nebraska, up in the NW corner between North & South Platte Rivers, clear out on the prairie with bluffs of virgin soil & lots of wild oats. Good pasture for the cows to grow fat on.Your Great Grandpa took a Claim on 40acres & 3 of his sons [Edward Ogden Kemp, David Julian Kemp, & my Grandfather, Marion Glenn Kemp] took themselves 40acres a piece around him to homestead. So the Kemp Clan had a full section. It came down to Hubert the baby of the family & he & sister,Jessie both single, stayed on & took care of their old parents. When Hazel's husband died, she sold the Grocery store & came back home too. She built a Living Room,Bedroom, & Bath onto the original large Kitchen & one Bedroom made of sod. They finished the upstairs off for Hube. Jessie kept the old sod bedroom where the School Marm[ my Grandmother, Frances Pearl Savage , wife of Marion Glenn Kemp] stayed the year she taught in a sod school out there. At age 2yrs when my folks were moving to Ohio we stayed all night at that old place. They had no stairs yet to the loft where the aunts slept on pallets, one side of a brown canvas curtain, the men folk slept on the other side. I remember kissing Grammaw goodnight & they handed Leigh & me up through a hole in the ceiling to the aunts who snugged us down with them. There was a ladder but our little legs were too short. How's that for a Memory! Dad [ Marion Glenn Kemp] built us a house on his 40acres where we lived just down over a slope from the old folks. It's still there & lived in, so is the old folks homestead." [ It was still lived in in 1979 when Aunt Marjie wrote me the letter.]. More from the letter: " Dear sweet Jessie died soon after Christmas in 1976. Hazel & Hube stayed on for another year. Hube had to sell his cattle because it was too hard on him. He said," I'd rather sell my Grandmother."He felt so bad looking out at the long, worn cattle paths on the prairie bluffs, empty now.The summer of 1978 Hubert realized he'd better get things settled for Hazel & get into a Veterans home in Council Bluffs himself. So they sold all the household goods, then the house & acreage. He put Hazel in a Mobile home in Bridgeport where close friends, the Holmes would run in several times a week as Hazel was going blind. Then he got settled in the Vet Home & Drs. discovered he had advanced diabetes on top of bad emphysema. Hube deteriorated rapidly & died in April of 1979 in Grand Island,Nebraska Vets Hospital. "Your GreatGreat Grandfather Gaumer was a fine Shoemaker & also mended shoes. Your Great Grandmother,Nancy Margaret Gaumer Kemp also had this skill which was passed on to her children,Hazel & your Grandfather Marion Glenn Kemp. Great Great Grandfather Daniel Gaumer parents were good Catholics. GGrandmother Nancy Margaret Gaumer Kemp had a family Catholic Bible on their Nebraska Homestead. Great Great Grandfather Daniel Gaumer was one of 4 brothers. One of them raised Race Horses. An Aunt of the Gaumer Brothers was working out in the fields in Germany. She had a pair of twins there & carried them into the house & the same afternoon was out working in the fields again." Aunt Marjorie copied the info down out of their family Bible that was on their homestead. I have an old picture of Francis Marion Kemp & wife, Nancy Margaret Gaumer Kemp taken in 1925 right before he died. Great Grandpa Francis Marion Kemp had a long flowing white beard. My Uncle Matthew Kemp looked just like him before he died & my brother, Joseph Kemp is looking more like him the older he gets. Since Francis Marion Kemp was sent to German Singing School in PA. it would seem to me that my KEMP Line must be a German Line . My Hoy line was said to be Welsh by my Grandfather, & I find them also in England & Ireland . And Mariah Hoy's mother was a Tarlton that came from England. So no-one else is German & I couldn't see them sending him to German singing school if he was English or Welsh. I'd appreciate anyone sharing any information they might have on any of these KEMP LINES with me, especially if anyone knows who the father of my GGGranfather Edward P. Kemp was that was born in Pennsylvania, or where he went from East Elizabeth,PA. after his wife died in 1862. I'm at a brick wall from there back.Any information shared with me would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Becky Kemp Austin blkaustin@wmconnect.com baustin924@yahoo.com
