I am seeking the Winnie/Whinney family of Osceola Co., IA. I am especially trying to figure out a family mystery about my GGrandmother, Anna Elizabeth (Winnie) Spencer, b. 1869. She was born and married in Sibley then raised her family in Sioux City, IA. My question is this: GGrandma was always spoken of as being "part-Indian"; when my mother gave me an old photo of her Grandmother, she sure enough looked *very* Indian to me-- dressed in fancy Victorian clothing! I had always assumed that her being part-Indian meant that she was adopted- or someone in the family told me that she was adopted. But I am starting to wonder now if one of her parents was part Indian- thus making her "part Indian." At any rate I am having great difficulty finding out information about this aspect of my GGrandmother's life. Her (adoptive?) parents were Henry and Elizabeth (Taylor) Winnie/Whinney. Henry's parents were from New York (father) and Missouri (mother). But his children seemed to all have been born in Osceola County, IA. Anna Elizabeth married George Albert Spencer of Sibley; her child-bearing years were 1890-1900. By this time the family had moved to Sioux City, IA where Spencers from this line live today. Is there a way I can find out if Anna Elizabeth Winnie/Whinney was in fact adopted -- or if of her parents-- Henry Winnie or Elizabeth Taylor-- were in part-Indian themselves? Making Anna "part-Indian"? In the Iowa Census of 1870, Anna was 9 months old, living with Henry and Elizabeth Winnie. If she were adopted, wouldn't she most likely have been adopted at a later time in her life, not as a baby, especially if she were mostly Indian?
