I am researching my Husbands Family "FINNING", which was actually FANNING, but for some reason (only known to them) around 1872 they changed their surname to FINNING (in Australia). His GGGGrandfathers name was Dominick FANNING with his wifes name being Mary MARTIN (on BDM records) I am unsure whethere Dominick & Mary were ever in Australia, as my Husbands GGGrandfathers name was Thomas FANNING. We cannot find where or when he was born but it would be Cir. 1822, if you go by death cert. we cannot find shipping records for Thomas, which makes us think he was born here, but unlikely as 1822 and Victoria? We have searched records for NSW, Australia to no avail also. Thomas married Jane(Mary)O'BRIEN in Melbourne, 1853 at St. Francis Catholic Church, Melbourne. My Father0in-law can remember being told their ancestry was from Tipperary in Ireland, i'm unsure this is factual though. We were wondering if anyone had come across this family in their researching etc. Any help would be much appreciated, and we might be able to help you fill in some blanks also.
