Wanting to find any information about mormon colonies and to see if anyone has information on my ancestors from that era. Here is what I have: Maria Justa Castaneda Baird, was born in Guadalajara Mexico. I don't now when she was born but she was around 18 when she married mama's father and he was in his 40's. She must have been in her late 20's or early 30's when she died. I don't know about her father but her mother was also from Mexico, no knowledge where but she was kidnapped at around 12 and raised by her husbands' mother until she was old enough to marry. She also became a US Citizen when she married her husband. She was also a Maria, I don't remember her middle name but her maiden name was Miramontes. Her father: William Arnold Baird, grandma said he said that he was born in Shackelford Texas during the 1860's at the time that President Abraham Lincoln died. Her uncle was older and remembered all the doors being draped with black wreaths to honor the death of the President. Grandpa Bill or Willy became a cowboy and left for Mexico where he ranched cattle and where he met and married grandma's mother. After Mexico, he drove a touring car all around El Paso Texas and into Mexico. It was also prohibition time so he would bootleg liquor from Mexico for people in Texas. He died of heart trouble while in his 60's in the early 30's. Grandfather: William Baird, I can't remember his middle name, it isn't the same as grandma's father. I don't know when or where he was born. He is Scottish and Irish. He was a doctor in the Civil War, he met Abraham Lincoln. Grandma said that he was related to John Adams (2nd President of the US from 1797 to 1801) and John Quincy Adams, (6th President of the US from 1825 to 1829) father and son. Also related to Zebulon Pike, founder of Pikes Peak in Colorado. He and a partner founded Hotel Deu (I don't know if I am spelling it right) a hospital in El Paso Texas. I don't know if it is still there. Grandmother: Mimi Lauterbach (I don't know if I am spelling it right or her rightful first name, Mimi might have been a nickname) I don't know where or when she was born. I think Grandma said she was German but I'm not sure if she was born there or not. She and her husband had about 5 or 6 children, Grandpa Bill was the youngest. Mama's mom and dad cared for Mimi when she was old before she died. I learned all this from listening to my mama, she had a lot to say and was very interesting about the times she lived in. I will always remember what she said about her Uncle, he said (and this was back in the late 20's) that we needed to watch out for Russia. How true, at that time they were our allies in WWI. Our family goes back for many generations but I can't give more info that that above. It hard to believe that my grandfather was in the Civil War when most people my age have grandpas that were maybe in WWI - during 1917 or so. Grandma's father was over 40 yrs older then her and Grandma was 30 when I was born. That is longer than a usual generation. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||
