GEORGE COLEMAN: Born 1807/1808 in Hampshire, England - at time of his conviction, George's "native place" was given as ' Headbourne Worthy near Winchester. William Boulter and George Coleman were charged with the robbery of John Dagwell of the sum of five shillings. Coleman submitted a confession in which "he acknowledged that he was with this mob, and that he was also with the mob who got the twenty pounds. SENTENCE: Death recorded, commuted to transportation for seven years. TRANSPORT: 'Proteus' - Barque 254 ton, Class E built in Java 1815. On arrival in Hobart Town, George was assigned to the Loan Gang. George Coleman was one of the early residents of Buninyong, Victoria, arriving in 1840 with the Learmonth Brothers. On 2 August 1841 George Coleman married Harriet WILSON in a Presbyterian Church in Geelong, Victoria. GEORGE COLEMAN AND HARRIET WILSON’S DAUGHTERS: JANE was born on 25 December 1863, aged 21, she married Thomas REDFERN in the United Church of England and Ireland at Buninyong where she was living. Thomas Redfern was born 1827 or 1828 in Derbyshire, England and was 35 when he married, worked as a 'carrier' and lived in Buninyong. His parents were Samuel ('farm steward') and Elizabeth Ann REDFERN. Jane and Thomas had seven children, all born in Buninyong: Mary Jane, born 1865 died 1872. Samuel Lawrence, born 1867 died 1934. * Ellen, born 1868 died 1944 in Seymour, Victoria. Emma, born 1871 died 1874. Mary Ann born 1873. Joseph born 1878. Thomas born 1884. * Ellen married Arthur William HOWELLS and they had four children: Violet Mabel Howells Arthur Howells born 1901 died 1965 in Seymour Victoria Ivor Lindsay Howells born 1902 died 1962 Leslie Norton Lawrence Howells. Jane died in Buninyong on 27 February 1919, aged 77 and the cause of death was 'pulmonary congestion and heart failure of four months' duration' and was buried in Buninyong Cemetery on 1 March 1919. Thomas died in Buninyong sometime in 1888. ELIZABETH BERTHA Elizabeth (known as 'Bertha') married James DONALD and they had three children: Emma Donald who died in 1926 James Donald born Ballarat 1868 died 1937 in Clifton Hill, Victoria Charles Donald born 1879 died 1960 in Melbourne, Victoria. Bertha died in 1936 at Oakleigh, Victoria. EMMA was born on 4 March 1878, aged 25 Emma married George WILSON (by license) at the Wesleyan Parsonage, Creswick, Victoria (Wesleyan Methodist Church). Emma and George gave their residence as Kingston at the time of their marriage. George WILSON was born 1845 in Knockcarnan, County Antrim, Ireland and his parents were John WILSON (farmer) and his wife Elizabeth (nee) COBURN. It is thought George WILSON arrived in Australia on the vessel "Queen". There were ten children born to Emma and George: Emma Wilson born 1875 died 1951 in Rochester, Victoria. Husband: PRIDEAUX. Nathaniel Alexander Wilson born 1876 died 1955 in Echuca, Victoria. Harriet Wilson born 1878 died 1968 in Caulfield, Victoria. John Wilson born 1880 died 1880, same day. George Wilson born 1881 in Kingston. Elizabeth Wilson born 1883. Georgina Bertha Wilson born 1886. Sarah Wilson born 1888. John George Wilson born 1891 died 1958 in Kyabram, Victoria Catherine Ivy Wilson born 1893 died 1978 in Echuca, Victoria. Husband: Joseph Nelson GLASS. George WILSON died on 17 February 1893 in Ballarat, Victoria and was buried in Creswick Cemetery. Emma died in 1937 in Echuca, Victoria and was buried in the Rochester Cemetery, Church of England Section Grave No. 350C. MARY There is no information regarding Mary's birth, marriage (if any) or death. On 8 June 1873 John Charles COLEMAN was born to Mary COLEMAN, aged 21 and living at Green Hill/s near Ballarat. The father's name was not given on the birth certificate, however a witness to the birth was a "Mrs. Redfern" - her sister Jane perhaps?
