Help for CousinConnect.com: Searching
You can search for a specific surname by using the search form on the home page or the advanced search form. Enter the surname you are looking for into the surname field. You can also choose to select a country to search.
If you don't select a country, the search will return results for that surname in all locations. If you get too many results, you can narrow down your search by choosing a country from the drop down box on the right hand side of the results page.
If you do select a country, you will see all queries related to that surname that are associated with the country you select. If there are still too many queries returned, you can further narrow down your search by selecting a state or province for some countries from the drop down list on the results page. In some cases you can then narrow your search even further by selecting a county.
Tips:
- If you are looking for an uncommon surname, start by searching for the surname without specifying a location. If you get too many queries returned, you can always narrow down your search on the results page.
- If you are looking for a common surname, you will probably want to specify a location in your search criteria to reduce the number of queries returned.
- If your surname has many possible spellings, you can use * as a wildcard character to represent any number of characters. For example, a search on 'SOMMER*' will return queries for SOMMERLAG as well as SOMMERLOCK and any other surname that starts with SOMMERL.
- If you use the advanced search form, you can check the box to specify a soundex search. This search will return all queries with surnames having the same soundex code as the surname you specify. For example, a search on "SOMMERLOCK" with the soundex box checked will also return 'SOMERLOCK' and 'SOMMERLAG'. Note: you cannot use wildcards and soundex in the same search.
