Searching for Atwell born circa 1790-1800 in probably Wythe Co VA; married Margaret "Polly" Songer ca. 1823; sons John David Atwell and Joseph Martin Atwell. Family tradition as stated by several different descendants is that Polly walked from Wythe Co VA to Lawrence Co OH. One researcher maintains that Polly had only one child, Joseph Martin, and that he was illegitimate. More recent research refutes this claim. It is known that she married John Norris in 1828 in Wytheville so it is to be assumed that first husband Atwell had died. The two Atwell children were adopted by John Norris and the descandants carry the Norris surname.
