My mother told me that my grandmother delivered a child out of wedlock in either NC or Tennessee assisted by a midwife. When my grandmother went back later to try to claim the child, the midwife told her that the child had died of "sour milk". Years later a woman came back to their hometown stating she had cancer and wanted to find her birth mother. Few members of the family would even speak with her.
