Looking for the father of a Joseph J Irby born in 1884 in Tennessee. The biggest hurdle is that Joseph did not get along at all with his father and changed his last name to Clifton. His father was either born in Tennessee or in Arkansas (the 1910 and 1920 census records show conflicting information about that).
One of Joseph's sons, John Hill Clifton (my grandfather; born 1918) was possibly named for a member of the family with the last name of Hill (I've always been told Hill is a family name) and I have found a John Clifton Hill who died in Arkansas in 1854 who may be a link.
Edit on 4/26/2008: Found out another key to the puzzle. His wife, Maud A. Wright's (b. 7 Oct 1891; whom he married about 1904) father was a J.A.
