Between October 4-5, 1861, 3rd Georgia Volunteers and 8th NC Troops made an amphibious attack on Hatteras Island just north of Chicamacomico, today's Rodanthe, and several hours later at Kinekeet. Only a few newspaper reports state that locals Mr. and Mrs. Goodwin were killed by the Georgians while attempting to run. Those from the Outer Banks of NC would be familiar with the Chicamacomico Races. These would be the only locals killed or who died in this Civil War event. Another report says it was just Mr. Goodwin, who was 70 years old at the time, and that it was an accidental shooting by the Confederates. Alternate spellings are Godwin and Goodin. One report indicates they were general store keepers. It is VERY possible that this report was fabricated for Northern papers. Offhand, I believe the Norfolk Daybook carried part of this story as well, so it was both in Northern and Southern papers. However, the attachment of a specific surname to the account leads one to believe there may be some truth here. I cannot find any cemetery records with these names. Can anyone give assistance in locating information on this? Contact me at leeoxford@comcast.net or call 410-251-5846. Thanks in advance!
