My name is Liz Benner. I am searching for the baby boy that I placed for adoption in February 1985. My maiden name at the time of the adoption was Nancy Elizabeth Lee. I named my son Shane Lee and he was born December 27, 1984. Shane was born at East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika, AL. Shane weighed 9 lbs. 3 oz. and was delivered by Dr. Chase @ 10:34 p.m.
I originally tried to place Shane through private adoption with a family that Dr. Chase knew, but it did not work out. I also went to the Save-A-Live Ministries and they worked with me for a few weeks concerning adoption and even going away for a short time to a Maternity home. However, a lay from DHR appeared at my apartment one day and told me that the people at Save-A-Life were not legitimate and that I would have trouble with the adoption. I had chosen to go through this pregnancy and the adoption without telling anyone in my family knowing, so I felt that I could not risk "problems" occurring. Mrs. Fober told me that an adoption through the state would be straight forward, unfortunately I would not be able to choose the adoptive couple or even meet them. On February 13, 1985, I met with Mrs. Fober at the Lee County Courthouse. I was able to see and hold my son and even have a few photos taken. I then had to appear before a judge in a hearing to sever my rights and allow Shane to be adopted. The case number was JU85060. I have had not contact and have not idea where or with whom my some was placed for adoption. I hope this will allow me to find some information. I made many choices 25 years ago that I thought would be best for my son, but I have never stopped wondering if he is safe, happy, loved, and understands in some small way that I loved him and felt I was doing what was best for him.
