He was born about 1844 in either Pennsylvania or Germany. He married Mary Ann Howery in March 1871 in West Virginia. They had a daughter Almeda Eichler b. 1874 who later married Joseph Robert Dillard. Mary also had two children named Joseph and Ora Belle that took the Eichler/Eikler/Ackler name but I am not sure if they are John's children.
